Popis The change in the position of local self-government as the lowest level of territorial self-government since the 1990s meant a new quality and new approaches of its bodies in decision-making, formation and responsibility for the entrusted territory in order to increase the quality of life of citizens. The municipality is defined as a territorial, self-governing and economic unit with legal personality, and its tasks and position have increased significantly in the last ten years, not only in Slovak conditions. The presented textbook deals with this aspect - the role, position and problems. The aim of the textbook is to provide basic knowledge about the position of local self-government and its changing role in the process of decentralization of public administration as a carrier of development processes in the area with emphasis on fulfilling the economic function of self-government. The defined goal respects the content of the textbook. Emphasis is placed on those policies that require their competencies of Slovak municipalities. The importance and irreplaceability of municipalities in the lives of citizens and society is also confirmed by the current difficult period of the world pandemic Covid-19, where Slovak municipalities have also played and continue to play an important role in the processes of overcoming it. The textbook is the result of several years of study, research and acquisition of practical knowledge of the authors. The individual chapters also present partial outputs within the solved grant VEGA no. 1/0683/21.
