Popis Universities have always played a key role in the development of society. Although language policies change, universities are expected to be flexible when responding to social change and demand. The paper will reflect the changing situation in Russian language teaching in the Czech Republic. The presentation will examine the trends that go with this change (the possibility of internships and exchange programs or electronic textbooks, among others). On the one hand, teachers are confronted with the demand for high quality teaching and continuous professional development, but on the other hand, they have to adapt to the new generation of students with new needs, studying strategies and possibilities arising from their IT knowledge. The aim of Russian language teaching at Czech universities is to cater for the wide variety of needs of those who will need the Russian language in their future careers. They will need to know both the language as well as the mentality of the country where the language is spoken. If Russian language teaching is viewed from the prism of other languages, followed by a precise analysis of studying strategies and competencies, then the Russian language will increase students’ chances to succeed and orientate in today’s plurilingual world.
