Popis Since the past century, the European countries have gone through major social reforms. From the end of the 19th century, Europe has been one of the most dynamically developing continents in terms of social risk protection. The objective of the welfare state and the reason for its establishment was to protect families and individuals against social risks. Traditionally, this was an adequate income to cover basic needs in times of sickness, old age, disability etc. However, new risks started being discussed at the end of the 70s last century. The most significant problems appeared to be changes in the labour market and lack of funds to cover all risks including the unemployment. The aim of the submitted paper is to evaluate the welfare state development in the EU Member States in the light of the labour market changes.
