HEALTH CARE

Navigating health care in a new country can be challenging — especially when you're focused on your studies. This page provides essential information to help you understand how health care works in the Czech Republic, what services are available to you as a student at Masaryk University, and where to turn in case of medical, psychological, or emergency needs.

How to Get the Insurance Card

  • Non-EU students: upon your arrival in Brno, you should visit your insurance company and present your insurance contract. Upon presenting the contract, you will receive the insurance card and insurance number, which you will need when visiting doctors in the Czech Republic.
  • EU students: upon arrival in Brno, you should visit the VZP insurance company and bring your European Health Insurance Card to receive the Czech insurance number which you will need when visiting doctors in the Czech Republic.

General Rules for Visiting a Doctor

  • It is essential to make an appointment by phone or email before visiting any doctor. In case of an emergency situation (broken bone, extensive bleeding, etc.), go directly to the hospital.
  • You should always take a medical report from the doctor in case you need to excuse your absence.
  • Do not forget to take the insurance card, insurance number or any other proof of your insurance. If the doctor doesn’t accept your insurance card and asks you to pay on the spot, do not forget to get a receipt/payment confirmation for a refund from your insurance company.
  • If you have a prescription from the doctor, you can pick up the medications at any pharmacy in the Czech Republic. This, however, doesn’t apply to e-prescriptions issued outside of the Czech Republic.
  • Students from non-EU countries or EU students without a Czech insurance number have to pay on the spot. The doctors mostly only accept cash.
  • If you need emergency dental treatment, expect to pay an amount exceeding 1,000 CZK, even if you do have a Czech insurance number.
