Description The article deals with trends in educational homogamy in Czech society from 1988 to 2000. It is assumed that educational homogamy indicates the degree of openness in social structure. Two hypotheses are tested: firstly, that during the nineties the relative educational homogamy became higher (the social structure of Czech society is closing). Secondly, educational homogamy is higher among people who get married younger (up to 29 years old), and lower among people, who get married later (over 30 years old). The data analysed were all for couples who married in the years 1988, 1991, 1993, 1997 and 2000, according to both partners' level of education and age. On the basis of log-linear analysis the first hypothesis was refuted (no strong changes in relative educational homogamy were observed during the nineties), and the second hypothesis was accepted (higher relative educational homogamy was observed among younger than among older engage couples marrying in those years).
