Description The text presents a quantitative investigation that focused on the relationship between the attitudes of the general population of the Czech Republic towards the Roma population and the extent of contact with this group. We analysed data gathered in 2021 via an omnibus survey (based on quota sampling) involving 1,000 respondents from the general population aged 18 years and over. The aim was to verify whether the attitudes of the non-Roma population towards Roma people are related to the extent of their contact with the Roma population, with respect to which we asked about the composition (diversity) thereof in terms of six areas of social life. In the case of distance, this factor was declared to comprise social distance (acceptable distance) with respect to these areas. Concerning both questions (on contact and social distance), we also observed the differences according to the sociodemographic characteristics of the respondents. The results revealed that the diversity of inter-ethnic contact is, to a great extent, related to accommodating attitudes. However, in the case of some of the sociodemographic characteristics considered, contact is not necessarily a determining factor. Although people with higher education levels were found to have fewer contacts with Roma people, their attitudes were observed to be more tolerant towards this group of the population. The results indicated an overall connection between contact and more accommodating attitudes; however, they did not allow for a definitive conclusion in the sense of confirming the so-called contact theory, according to which intergroup contact acts to reduce negative attitudes, i.e. no such trend was indicated by the data.
