Description In the present time research, development and innovation are considered to be the main driver of economic growth. Innovation policy therefore becomes one of the most important public policies and a great emphasis is paid on its effective implementation, both on the national and the European level. One of the most discussed approaches to implementation of innovation policy is the concept of regional innovation systems. This concept lays stress on connections between actors and mutual learning. In the concept of regional innovation systems innovation policy is implemented through policy mixes which react to specific regional needs. The choice of instruments is a complicated process requiring careful analysis of regional strength and weaknesses and also a very good knowledge of existing innovation instruments and their characteristics. The aim of the paper is to classify innovation instruments from several viewpoints and to outline steps which should be followed while creating policy mix. The classification based on the support recipient, support form and support aim, the phase of the innovation process and on the regional and investment point of view. For the better illustration an example of policy mix aimed to adoption of innovation is presented. Instruments used in the mix are described and classified.
