Academic Senate of the Faculty of Economics and Administration

The Academic Senate is the highest self-governing body of the Faculty and consists of the Academic Staff Chamber (11 members) and the Students' Chamber (6 members). The Academic Senate has many powers, particularly in relation to the operation of the Faculty, its structure and budget. The members of the Senate elect a candidate for Dean, comment on proposals for study programmes and set up commissions to deal with various matters. The Senate is described in more detail in Articles 15 to 18 of the Statute of the Faculty of Economics and Administration and the Election Rules and Rules of Procedure of the Academic Senate.

The Academic Senate is an opportunity for students to communicate suggestions, proposals or even complaints to the faculty management through their elected representatives. Suggestions can be sent to the email address of the AS Students' Chamber: skas@econ.muni.cz.

Basic information

The Academic Senate is the representative body of the academic community, the highest self-governing body of the Faculty and the guarantor of academic freedoms at the faculty.

The Academic Senate has 17 members. It consists of the Academic Staff Chamber composed of 11 members and the Students' Chamber composed of 6 members. The term of office of each member of the Academic Senate is three years.

The Academic Senate is led by the Chairman, elected from among the teachers (members of the Academic Staff Chamber) by an absolute majority of all members of the Academic Senate. The Chairman of the Academic Senate is also the Chairman of the Academic Staff Chamber. In the absence of the Chairman of the Academic Senate, the Chairman of the Students' Chamber, who is also the Vice-Chairman of the Academic Senate, shall take his place.

A member of the Academic Senate is obliged to attend meetings of the Academic Senate and the bodies to which he/she has been elected. If he/she is unable to attend for serious reasons, he/she shall apologise in advance to the Chairman of the Academic Senate or the Chairman of the body of which he/she is a member.

Meetings of the Academic Senate are convened by the Chairman or, in his/her absence, by his/her substitute (the Chairman of the Students' Chamber).

The date and time of the meeting are announced via the FEA Newsletter, the Academic Senate notice board located at the rear entrance of the Faculty, electronic mail and the Academic Senate website. Meetings are open to the public. They are usually held on the second Monday of each month at 12:30 p.m. in the large meeting room of the FEA MU Dean's Office. 

The Academic Senate is quorate if at least a two-thirds majority of its members is present.

Senate powers

The Academic Senate of the Faculty

  • discusses and approves the proposal for the Statute of the Faculty, as well as proposals for other internal regulations of the Faculty, and submits them to the Academic Senate of Masaryk University for final approval,
  • submits a proposal to the Rector of the University for the appointment and removal of the Dean of the Faculty,
  • based on the proposal of the Dean, decides on the establishment, fusion, merger, division or dissolution of Faculty units,
  • approves the Faculty's substantive and financial plan, including the annual distribution of financial means to Faculty units and monitoring of their use,
  • approves the number and structure of the Faculty staff,
  • approves the Dean's proposal for the appointment and removal of members of the Scientific Council of the Faculty and the Disciplinary Committee of the Faculty,
  • delegates the Faculty's representatives to the Council of Universities,
  • reports to the academic community of the Faculty on its activities and the state of the Faculty at least once a year,
  • appoints and removes its Chairman by secret ballot, establishes its commissions, appoints, monitors and dismisses their members and its representatives in other bodies,
  • convenes the assembly of the academic community, or conferences of delegates of the academic community, and proposes the agenda of the meetings,
  • discusses other matters of importance to the Faculty and is responsible for the exercise of academic freedom.

The Academic Senate of the Faculty gives its opinion in particular on

  • proposals for study programmes at the Faculty,
  • the Dean’s intention to appoint or dismiss Vice-Deans.
