Academic Senate of the Faculty of Economics and Administration

The Academic Senate is the supreme self-governing body of the faculty, and consists of a chamber of 11 employees and a chamber of six students. The Academic Senate has many powers, especially with respect to the operation of the faculty, its structure and budget. Members of the senate elect a dean, comment on proposals for study programmes, and establish commissions to solve various issues. The senate is described in greater detail in Articles 15–18 of the statutes of the Faculty of Economics and Administration and the Rules of Election and Rules of Procedure of the Academic Senate. 

Through their elected representatives in the Academic Senate, students can submit proposals, ideas or complaints to the management of the faculty.

Basic information

The Academic Senate is the academia’s representative, the supreme self-governing body, which guarantees academic freedoms at the faculty.

The Academic Senate has 17 members. It consists of an employee chamber of 11 senators and a student chamber of six senators. The term of office of individual members of the faculty’s Academic Senate is 3 years.

The Academic Senate is led by a chairman elected from among teachers (members of the employee chamber of the senate) by absolute majority of all members of the Academic Senate. The chairman of the senate is also the chairman of the employee chamber. In the absence of the chairman of the Academic Senate, the chairman is deputised by the chairman of the student chamber, who is also the vice-chairman of the senate.

Members of the Academic Senate are obliged to attend meetings of the Academic Senate and the bodies to which he/she was elected. If he/she is unable to attend a meeting for serious reasons, he/she is obliged to send an excuse in advance to the chairman of the Academic Senate or the chairman of the body of which he/she is a member.

The session of the Academic Senate is convened by the chairman, or, if absent, by his/her substitute (chairman of the student chamber).

The date and time of a session is announced via the Journal of the Faculty of Economics and Administration, Notice Board of the Academic Senate located at the back entrance to the faculty, electronic mail and on the senate’s website. Sessions of the Academic Senate of the faculty are always open to the public. They are usually held on the second Monday of every month, at 1:00 p.m., in the large meeting room of the dean’s office of the Faculty of Economics and Administration, Masaryk University.

The Academic Senate is quorate if at least two-third majority of its members is present.

Senate powers

The Academic Senate of the faculty

  • discusses and approves proposals for statutes of the faculty as well as proposals for other internal regulations thereof, and submits them for final approval to the senate of Masaryk University,
  • submits a proposal for the appointment and removal of the faculty’s dean to the rector of the university,
  • upon the dean’s proposal, it decides about the establishment, fusion, merger, separation or cancellation of faculty units,
  • approves the subject-matter and financial plan of the faculty, including the annual distribution of financial means to the faculty units, monitoring their use,
  • approves the number and structure of the faculty staff,
  • approves the dean’s proposal for the appointment and removal of members of the faculty’s academic council and disciplinary commission,
  • delegates the faculty’s representatives to the Higher Education Council,
  • submits a report on its activity and on the faculty’s condition to the faculty’s academia at least once a year,
  • appoints and removes its chairman by direct ballot, establishes its commissions, appoints, checks and removes its members and its representatives in other bodies,
  • convenes sessions of the academia and/or conferences of the academia’s delegates, and proposes the agenda of meetings,
  • discusses other issues relevant for the whole faculty and for ensuring academic freedoms in its conditions.

The Academic Senate of the faculty gives its opinion especially on

  • proposals for study programmes held at the faculty,
  • the dean’s intention to appoint or remove assistant deans.
