Description Research and development are generally considered one of the main preconditions for innovations development. In developed countries several per cent of gross domestic product is invested in research and development. People that carry out research and development are at least as important as expenditures on R&D. Knowledge economy requires a lot of people in R&D. Strong attention is paid to involvement of young people, especially those of them with technical and natural science education. Some countries motivate young researches through special programmes and supporting measures. The article deals with initiatives on support of young researches (including PhD. students) in foreign countries. Various measures from Europe are introduced via case studies and their potential application in the Czech Republic is assessed. Some of the measures support PhD. students generally, others are focused on special branch of economy.
