Description The purpose of this paper is to survey the literature on the inverted-U relationship between competition and innovation. The emphasis is placed on the theoretical literature. The paper documents the development of theoretical explanations of the inverted-U pattern and presents a detailed discussion of the models by Scherer (1967b) and Aghion et al. (2005). The main finding of the survey is that up to date, there is no definitive explanation of the inverted-U pattern frequently observed in the empirical literature.
