Description The starting point of this paper is a study (Biograf 22/2000) dealing with the conversion to Buddhism on the basis of narrative interviews with some of the young converts. My critical response to it reflects some of the basic theoretical problems possibly emerging in the work of narrative analysis. The first comment concerns the general question of what narratives are and it is argued that its reference to some events and its temporal character should be taken into account when analysing. The second observation concerns the relation of narratives to "reality" and while accepting the invented level of all biographical narratives the interpretation of narratives as pure rhetorical strategies for covering inconsistencies in life is refused. Lastly the question of influencing role of the researcher is opened up and the necessity of reflecting our (theoretical, cultural and power) positions is stressed.
