Description The municipality of Mírov has 385 inhabitants, it is a small number in conditions of the Czech Republic. There is a high security prison with nationwide significance which employs more than 200 employees. The presence of such a large employer brings to the municipality and its inhabitants a number of advantages but also disadvantages. The goal of the paper is to discuss the influence of the large employer to the municipality and the conditions for life. A questionnaire survey among inhabitants, discuss meeting with the inhabitants using participatory methods of working with the public and a semi-structured interview with the mayor and municipal representative were conducted. The paper contains a summary of the main factors that are related to the presence of the large employer and affect the municipality and its inhabitants. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was used to achieve the goal.
