Description The issues of charitable giving have been central to the interest of researchers in the international field for already several decades. The topic of charitable giving is closely connected with economic policy and affects the issues of civil society through the financing of the third sector (non-profit organizations). The objective of this paper is to carry out a critical exploration of facts based on a review of the theories and data sources relating to charitable giving and expressing its volume and structure. The paper is looking for and submitting appropriate explanatory paradigms enabling to conceptually anchor the subject of charitable giving and, thanks to this, find a theoretically grounded set of variables determining charitable giving. Following on from the captured intellectual development in the given area, the paper also maps the current state of the empirical knowledge in the Czech Republic.
