Description The paper describes the current state and developments in the Czech nonprofit sector against the backdrop of the economic crisis and the resulting austerity measures, the societal and political situation, the changes in legislature and the behaviour of individual and institutional donors. In the introductory chapters, we offer a sketch of the historical legacies that have shaped the post-1989 development of the Czech nonprofit sector and the basic facts and figures about its economy. Then we proceed to discuss the consequences of the membership in the European Union, including the impact of the EU accession on the sector and its relations with the other sectors, the rise of quasi-nonprofits and quasi-representatives of the sector and the resulting negative influence on the relations within the sector. We explore and assess the political and the financial contribution of the EU to the development of the sector. The next chapter looks at the impact of the banking, financial and economic crises 2007-2012 on the third sector: we introduce the situation of the country as a whole, then examine statistical data on the income of nonprofits to see if the crisis has impacted on the ability and willingness of donors to support nonprofit action and finally we note that the crisis is seen not only as a disaster but also as a challenge. Finally, we discuss the radical reform of private law in the newly-instituted Civil Code and the main changes it will bring about in the operating environment of Czech NPOs.
