This project aims to study the long and short-term drivers of the accumulation of social capital and voting behavior. We will build our contribution around two main empirical approaches. First, we will follow a historical approach exploiting two natural experiments to analyze the long-term impact of religion and the Soviet military presence in post-war Czechoslovakia. Second, we aim to investigate how social capital and social preferences react to contingent stimuli such as exposure to war and corruption by administering a survey experiment to a representative sample of Ukrainian refugees displaced by the Russian invasion. Finally, we will assess how exogenous variations in social capital affect voting behavior and the individual willingness to comply with emergency recommendations and contribute to public welfare in a public health crisis.
