INTERRUPTION OF STUDIES
Interruption of studies is a formal process that allows students to temporarily suspend their studies at Masaryk University for one or more semesters. This option may be useful in cases where students are unable to continue their studies due to personal, health-related, or other serious reasons. Another case in which studies are interrupted is when a student fails the Final State Examination (more information is to be found below).
During the interruption period, students are not actively enrolled in studies and lose their student status. This fact may influence students' visa, so before you decide to interrupt your studies, make sure you get in touch with the Ministry of the Interior and get information on your situation.
Please note that interruption during the first semester is not allowed.
Interruption of studies is only possible after meeting certain conditions, these are described in detail below:
Conditions for interruption of studies
Meeting conditions for enrolment in the following semester:
Interruption is only possible if yo u have earned enough credits and met all requirements for enrollment in the following semester. You can check your situation here: Apply for being enrolled in the term.
Deadline for submission of the Application:
To interrupt your studies, you have to submit the Application for study interruption by the end of the period set for making changes in course enrolment. You can check the deadline in the Schedule of the Academic Year.
After the end of the period set for making changes in course enrolment, study interruption is only allowed for serious reasons (e.g. health issues). Your application must include a supporting document.
Duration of the interruption period:
(This information is not related to students interrupting their studies due to pregnancy or motherhood - more information on this is in the section Interruption of studies due to pregnancy or illness)
The total number of interrupted semesters must not exceed the standard length of your study programme (BA students = 6 semesters, MA students = 4 semesters). All periods of interruption are cumulative – for example, two separate interruptions of two semesters each count as four interrupted semesters in total.
At the same time, the total duration of your studies, including interruptions, must not exceed twice the standard length of your programme. For BA students, this means that the duration of their studies (active + interruption) must not exceed 12 semesters. For MA students, the limit is 8 semesters.
In case your studies exceed twice the standard length of your programme, your studies will be terminated.
It is your responsibility not to exceed these periods, your study coordinator is not obliged to monitor them.
How to submit an application
Submit your application by the deadline via the Information System: Submit your application here. Another way to submit the application: IS - Document Office - Submit new application - Faculty of Economics and Administration - Office for International Relations - Application for Study Interruption.
Once submitted, your study coordinator will process the application. Once the decision is made, you will receive the official Decision via your university e-mail inbox. The Decision contains important information concerning your next steps, so make sure you read it properly.
Consequences of study interruption
At the time of the interruption, you cease to be a student and therefore have no obligations or rights in your studies. For example, you cannot take exams, attend classes, seminars, computer labs or the canteen. Nor can you be accommodated in a dormitory or benefit from a housing grant. But you can visit libraries, for example, because they are open to the public.
During the interruption period, you can still access the IS and your university e-mail.
IMPORTANT: It is extremely important for international students to understand that interrupting their studies results in the loss of student status, which may have serious implications for their visa and possibility to stay in the Czech Republic. We strongly recommend that students consult with the Ministry of the Interior before initiating the interruption process.
Tuition fee:
You do not pay the tuition fee for a semester during which your studies are interrupted. If you have already paid for that semester, the fee will be kept as a deposit for the semester when you re-enrol in your studies.
Re-enrolment in studies after the interruption
Before the end of the interruption period, you must notify the faculty of your decision to return to active study (or request an extension of the interruption). You notify the faculty via the IS: Request for the Enrolment after the Interruption of Studies.
If you do not re-enrol in studies and do not apologise within five working days or show serious reasons that prevented you from re-enrolling, your studies will be terminated.
Interruption of studies after failing a Final State Examination
If you fail the Final State Examination, you are entitled to one resit attempt.
If you fail the Examination but have met the conditions for enrolment in the following semester and wish to be enrolled in that semester, you must apply for enrolment in the semester via the Information system. Otherwise, your studies will be interrupted by administrative decision until the resit date of the Examination.
If you fail the Examination and have not met the conditions for enrolment in the following semester, your studies will be automatically interrupted by administrative decision until the resit date of the Examination.
If you have already exceeded twice the standard length of study, your studies will be terminated, even though under normal circumstances you would be entitled to a resit attempt.
In case you need new visa to come for the Final State Examination resit, make sure you apply for it on time to ensure you are back in Brno on time as this reason for missing the Examination cannot be excused.
Interruption of studies due to motherhood or illness
If you are pregnant, contact your study coordinator to discuss your studies.
A student has the right to interrupt their studies at any time in connection with parenthood, childbirth or pregnancy (but not before eight weeks before giving birth), and after for the entire recognised period of parenthood. The condition is providing the child's birth certificate at the faculty's Office for International Relations.
If you interrupt your studies due to pregnancy, the interrupted period is not included in the total duration of studies.
Examples of when it is (im)possible to interrupt studies
- I am in the first semester of a BA or MA programme (this applies also to MA students who are graduates of our BA programme) and I have not yet met the conditions for enrolment in the second semester – 🔴 STUDIES CANNOT BE INTERRUPTED (only in serious reasons, see above)
- I am in the first semester of a BA or MA programme, it is the exam period, and I have earned enough credits to proceed to the second semester, even though enrolment has not yet taken place – ✅ STUDIES CAN BE INTERRUPTED
- I am in a higher semester of a BA or MA programme, it is after the start of the exam period (e.g. spring semester), I have met the conditions for enrolment in the following semester, the period for making changes in course enrolment has not yet ended, and I have not exhausted the maximum allowed interruption period – ✅ STUDIES CAN BE INTERRUPTED
- I am in a higher semester of a BA or MA programme, I am enrolled in the semester (e.g. spring), the period for making changes in course enrolment has already ended, and I have not exhausted the maximum allowed interruption period –⚠️ STUDIES CAN BE INTERRUPTED ONLY IF I HAVE MET THE CONDITIONS FOR ENROLMENT IN THE NEXT SEMESTER (e.g. earned 45 credits in the previous autumn semester and have no repeated courses in the current semester)
- I am in a higher semester of a BA or MA programme, I am enrolled in the semester (e.g. spring), the period for making changes in course enrolment has already ended, and I have not met the conditions for enrolment in the following semester (autumn) –
