Dominika Tóthová has received a grant of CZK 500,000 per year for two years (2022–2023). This support is the opportunity for her to develop and expand her current research activities in the field of environmental and health economics. In the context of her research goals, she plans to examine the economic consequences of health impacts caused by air pollution exposure. Over the next two years, she will monitor air quality in Brno and analyse measures leading to its improvement.

Scientists based in the US, Emily C. Dore and Michal Horný, delivered a lecture within the MUNI Seminar Series on 10 April. Its main topic was population health and health equity from the perspective of a sociologist and an economist. In this interview, they tell us what their respective fields have in common, compare Czech and US healthcare systems and open up about the work-life balance at US universities.

Air quality in Brno has been improving but it is still far from ideal

Poor air quality has significant economic impacts on people's health. A team of scientists from ECON MUNI and the RECETOX centre has been preoccupied with air quality in Brno since 2021. They have even involved in their research children from several primary schools. Dr Dominika Tóthová, Associate Professor Vilém Pařil and Dr Ondřej Mikeš answer the questions.

Namaste Care considers patients’ individual needs. Researchers from ECON MUNI measure how effective it is.

Since the beginning of the year, the researchers involved in the In-Touch project are trying to improve the lives of people with dementia and of those who take care of them. Health economists from ECON MUNI are also part of the international team. Jakub Hlávka, head of the Health Economics, Policy, and Innovation Institute (HEPII), says that palliative care should take the emotional, spiritual, and cultural needs of patients into account.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected the way the state administration worked at all levels during the pandemic. Some of the changes introduced still apply, while other changes such as remote work in some organisations are slowly disappearing and authorities are restoring to pre-pandemic practices.
