Description Travel to services and retailing represents an important regional formation process. Retail and service functions pose one of the key factors for the stability and social status of the rural area. Various developmental tendencies may arise with them, which can threaten or strengthen the status of rural area. Service functions are linked to selected public policies at the state, regional and municipal level (especially transport services, social policy, employment, population and migration policy, business support, etc.). Service functions in rural area are often the subject of research. The goal of the paper is to provide an overview of the research in this field, based on the research and analysis of expert literature. The paper summarizes the identified developmental tendencies of rural service functions, the offered solutions to identified problems and the use of opportunities. The paper also contains the main theoretical models of shopping behaviour and travel to retail and services and discuss their possible application to rural areas. A method of comparison and analysis of expert literature was applied to achieve the goal.
