Description New wave of the current separatist movements in Europe is analysed with respect to the human capital building in the secessionist regions. The aim of our paper is to analyse human capital building in the secessionist regions in comparison to the non-secessionist regions in their respective countries. For our study four traditional secessionist countries were chosen: Belgium, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. We use results of the Programme for International Student Assessment of the OECD to approximate quality of the human capital stock. PISA results in the secessionist regions are significantly better in comparison to the non-secessionist regions despite the fact that the total level of the formal human capital stock does not differ significantly. Moreover, the secessionist regions invest in the education 12% above their respective country average. We prove that the secessionist regions in four European countries put more emphasis on the human capital building than rest of their countries.
