Description The article deals with the process of defining the metropolitan areas in the Czech Republic. It analyses the existing methodologies to define the metropolitan areas of Brno and Ostrava for purposes of the Integrated Territorial Investment (ITI), which played an important motivational role in the creation of the methodologies to define metropolitan areas. Furthermore, the article presents other methodological approaches, how to define metropolitan areas. In the terms of a complex determination of a territory as an organic whole, using a unified methodology to define different metropolitan areas may be almost impossible, especially in polycentric regions. On the basis of our own methodology, this fact was confirmed. The key factor, confirming this assumption, was the settlement structure of the region and the dominance of the city core, for which the metropolitan area is defined.
