Description The aim of the study was to analyse the risks of poverty, material deprivation and social exclusion in the Czech families rising children and the change between 2008 and 2013, based on the data SILC supplemented with qualitative techniques. Overall situation and the trends appear to be contradictory, to some extent. One the one hand the positive development is evident, on the other hand some specific problems emerge of deepen. The risk of poverty dropped, to the lowest level in the EU, in particular in households which are more affected by the risk like those with low work intensity of incomplete households. The risk of poverty is due to the interplay of several factors when the labour market position of parents is the most important (it is of course influenced by other factors like education, age, health status, number of children, completeness of the family). On the other hand, hard poverty appears to be a problem (this is income lower than the living minimum after housing costs) when incomes are not suffi cient to cover the basic need of the households. Effectiveness of social transfers (when pensions are not taken into account) is in the Czech Republic clearly above the EU 28 average. But when compared to 2008 it dropped by 6 percentage points. The explorations of the subjective perceptions of poverty and material deprivation in families raising children documented that not much covered but substantially important for breaking the cycle of disadvantage and their development are the expenditure on children´s education, transport to school, leisure activities.
