Description Economic relations between China and European Union have evolved dramatically in the last few decades. Mainly the trade volume has recorded an immense growth. In this paper we analyse the nature of this growth. We follow the methodology of Kehoe and Ruhl (2013) to assess whether the trade between People’s Republic of China and European Union was growing on intensive or extensive margin. Next, we study whether the period of the most important growth on extensive margin coincides with the trade liberalisation periods or some other structural changes in these two economies. We find out that the extensive margin was gradually increasing during the observed period.
