Jakub Hlávka: Addressing the Gaps in Preparedness of Healthcare Systems for Disease-Modifying Therapies for Alzheimer’s Disease

Public lecture within the habilitation procedure of Jakub Hlávka in the field of Public Economics.

Emerging disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) offer the potential to slow cognitive decline in early stages of the disease, marking a paradigm shift in dementia care. However, their effective deployment depends on a healthcare system's capacity to screen, diagnose, treat, monitor eligible patients for side effects, and to finance such therapies. Our previous research has comprehensively assessed the preparedness of select healthcare systems (e.g. in the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia and large European countries) and work is ongoing to identify barriers to timely diagnosis and tretment of AD. This lecture will offer insights into the most significant barriers and opportunities to overcome them, with a specific discussion of healthcare system preparedness for AD DMTs in Europe ahead of new treatment options becoming available to patients in the coming months.

The lecture will take place at ECON MUNI in room P201 on 26 September 2025 between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm.

It is possible to join online on MS Teams (link available upon request), but in-person attendance is encouraged and welcome.
