Who is it for
The course is designed for students of the Master’s program in Applied Health Economics, as well as professionals interested in health economics. English proficiency at B2 level or higher is required. Classes are held weekly in-person on Friday afternoons in Brno. The course is open to anyone who wants to broaden their knowledge and earn ECTS credits, which can be recognized towards future studies or at other institutions.
The course is conducted in English.
Goal
The course aims to introduce key areas of health economics and the functioning of health systems through the lens of economic theory. It provides participants with foundational knowledge in measuring efficiency, analyzing stakeholder behavior, and applying selected analytical methods relevant to health economics.
Content
- Introduction to health economics and its relation to public finance
- Demand for health, health insurance, moral hazard, information asymmetry
- Healthcare provider markets, efficiency measurement, reimbursement systems
- Roles of government and the private sector, market failures
- International comparisons of healthcare systems
- Data sources and empirical research in health economics
- Economics of innovation and health technology assessment
- Key current challenges: costs, quality of care, population health
- Development of soft skills essential for healthcare professionals
Schedule
In-person meetings will take place in classroom S309 every Friday from 12:00 to 13:50, except for Fri 7th Nov 2025.
