Overview and examples of using university passwords

Zadání hesla v počítačové učebně

Students of ESF MU need to know (and not to confuse) at least the following three passwords for their university studies:

  • primary
  • secondary
  • faculty

Primary password

Use:

Every new student receives a primary password during registration and uses it mainly at work with the university information system.

Secondary password

Examples of use:

  • as a login password for a reader’s account in library system Aleph
  • as authentication for the Eduroam wireless network
  • for downloading university email through POP3 protocol
  • as a login password for using PCs in the Central computer study room at Komenského square
  • management of a student’s own printing tasks on the YCollege print server

Secondary-password authentication is used by the majority of university applications (system WebKredit for lunch orders being an exception). Every user changes this password him-/herself in the IS MU (which means that he/she needs to know his/her primary password). Attention: this password is not set for new students at all and therefore it is necessary for new students to create this password before using any of the above-mentioned applications.
Since some applications use the secondary password even in a non-encrypted form (e.g. when downloading email through POP3 protocol), it is regarded as less safe, and for this reason it is strongly recommended not to set the secondary password the same as the primary or faculty password that are always transferred in an encrypted form.

Faculty password

Examples of use:

  • as a login password for using faculty PCs, including the printing option
  • as a login password for using the Studium online e-learning system
  • access to faculty email (both webmail and through IMAP protocol)
  • access to a student’s network folder outside the ESF network (SSH, SFTP)
  • authentication for the library proxy-server
  • as a login password for using web administration (when posting feedback from practical instruction)

The general rule is: faculty services = faculty password. Every new student receives the password during registration and has no possibility to change it him-/herself.

If problems with the primary or faculty password occur, it is necessary to contact CIKT staff who can set a new password for ESF students. For security reasons, no passwords can be sent by email; it is necessary to pick up a new password in person or over the phone.
