Final State Examinations

An overview of directives, instructions, measures and other sources on the subject matter is contained in: DIRECTIVE N.9/2008 and the MU Study and Examinations Regulations (Section 22 in particular).

Every single-field study is duly completed by a final state examination at the faculty. For all the fields of study Directive N.9/2008 prescribes the same format of the final state examination consisting of:

  • Defence of the thesis (Bachelor's or Diploma),
  • Economics course and
  • Specialist course.

More information on the process of the final state examination including details of question areas is posted by individual departments on the website of the English study programmes.

The dates of final state examinations are announced by the field-specific departments. Both the period for determination of final state examination dates and thesis submission are set out by the Calendar of the academic year.

Field-specific final state examinations have two rounds – summer and autumn. Students register for the final state examination in the roster in the IS MU.

Remedial dates for final state examinations are scheduled by individual departments as needed either for special dates or for regular summer and autumn semester dates (please inquire about the current situation at the Office for International Relations). Students are obliged to register for the final state examination during the semester in which they met their study obligations or in the semester immediately following (see Subsection 22 (6), MU Study and Examinations Regulations). This is required also of students with unfavourable thesis report (unacceptable grading F) – the final thesis grading is determined only by the examination board.

In the case of single-field follow-up Master's and Master's studies both the Thesis Defence and the Field-Specific and Economics Final State Examinations take place on the same date. You may take the Final State Examination only after all the study obligations have been met, i.e. you have passed all the exams and obtained all the credits prescribed as required, or selective for your study field and you have obtained the minimum of the total number of credits required for the whole study.

Should you fail the Final State Examination, you are obliged to register for a resit for dates determined by respective departments, not later than by the end of the semester immediately following after the semester in which your state examination overall result was unacceptable (see Subsection 22(8), MU Study and Examinations Regulations). In the time period between the unsuccessful final state examination and remedial date (resit date), your studies are automatically interrupted by the Dean. You only resit the specific part of the Final State Examination where your grading was unacceptable. Neither The Higher Education Act nor Internal Regulations of Masaryk University make it possible to recognize the Final State Examination Results attained in previous studies. Neither is it permissible to automatically enter the result of one Final State Examination in concurrent studies.

An official document of completion for each part of the Final State Examination is not issued as these form an integral part of the state examination. Failure to complete all the parts results in failure to complete the Final State Examination as such. Completion of the Final State Examination (i.e. of all its parts is documented by a diploma and a diploma supplement.
