Diploma Thesis Writing

An overview of directives, instructions, measures and other sources on the subject matter is contained in: the MU Study and Examinations Regulations (Section 22,30,32,33 in particular), DIRECTIVE N.3/2008, DIRECTIVE N.2/2010, RECTOR'S MEASURE N.3/2009.

According to the Academic Calendar, the student selects the topic of his/her thesis first, choosing from a Package of Topics. Where to select the topic in the IS and how to enroll for it, please see here.

The final (Bachelor's, Diploma or Dissertation) thesis – its writing and defence – forms one of the vital parts of the study through which each student demonstrates his or her ability to analyze problems and think independently. It is therefore essential to devote to thesis writing a great deal of attention and consistently follow the rules determining its formal and content-specific elements. In violating the set rules (whether deliberately or as a result of negligence) students expose themselves to a risk of the „N“ (Requirements Not-fulfilled) grading awarded for the Bachelor / Diploma Seminar 1/2, Bachelor / Diploma Thesis or the Dissertation Preparation courses, or the „F“ grading for the Thesis Defence, or even the risk of disciplinary saction resulting in a student's expulsion from the study programme by the Dean.

The rules for the Bachelor's or Diploma thesis defence and submission are governed by the MU Study and Examinations Regulations (Chapter IV, Section 22, Subsections 2), 3) and 4).
The Bachelor's or Diploma final thesis must be submitted in a printed form to a date set by the Calendar of the academic year to the department supervising the study field in question and simultaneously entered it in the MU Information System (the procedure to follow when entering the final work is described in the MU Information System).

The thesis electronic version is required for the purposes of long-term achiving and it is also used as a base document to draft its assessment and report. The printed version submitted at the department must be completely identical to the electronic version, a fact which you confirm in the respective MU IS application. A copy once submitted may not be handled in any way, it is not possible to make any alterations to it, whether formal or content-specific. Only in the event of the unsuccessful thesis defence at the state examination when the examination board rates your thesis with the „F“ grading, may you make changes to your thesis or write a brand new one and submit it the newly created archive – your previous final thesis will, however, remained deposited in the MU IS. The basic rules of thesis writing, submission and defence are governed by the MU Study and Examinations Regulations (Chapter V, Sections 30, 32 and 33).

Should the final thesis contain data and information (e.g. company accounting or data subject to a trade secret) which may not be publicised, you are required to divide your work in sections to make it possible for some parts of the text to be publicised and for other parts to remain stored in a non-public archive (see the Rector's Measure N. 3/2009). You enter your thesis in its entirety in the MU IS, but divided into individual files including the non-public sections. We recommend that on thesis submission you ask the secretary of the respective department to tick the concealment of the files in question (should you fail to do so, all the parts will become publicly accessible on thesis submission). The ultimate decision on which parts are to be concealed is, however, made by the thesis supervisor. It is advisable to discuss the extent of concealment with the supervisor beforehand. This may even be included in the thesis assignment. In any case it is essential that the parts intended for publication contain a clear statement of the thesis goals and results including the reasons for non-publication of some of its parts.

Formal rules of the Bachelor's or Diploma thesis writing (formal arrangement, length, font type and size, chapter structure, manner of printing and binding, submission, etc.) are governed by Directive N.2/2010 and Directive N. 3/2008.

You may download a sample thesis structure in the DOC or ODT formats.

The printed version (not the electronic version) of the Bachelor's or Diploma thesis includes its Assignment. The binding Assignment is deposited in the MU IS final theses roster and its printed form signed by the Dean acts as a supplement to the Final examination record (this is supervised by the field-specific department). It is your responsibility to include in the printed and bound form of your thesis the Assignment which may be downloaded from the following MU IS application (Documents→Faculty of Economics and Administration→ Assignment of final thesis→ Department→ Bachelor's / Diploma work → respective academic year of thesis assignment).

The gravest violation of rules of thesis writing (the greatest offence in the academic world in general) is constituted by plagiarism, i.e. a theft or fraudulent adoption of intellectual property of another. Plagiarism by its definition is always perceived as an intentionally committed offence. It is in your own interest to fully familiarize yourselves with the definition of plagiarism and with the binding rules of source acknowledgement (i.e. quoting the sources of adopted passages and ideas) which are governed by Directive N.3/2008. Teachers (thesis supervisors) and supervisors are obliged to inspect adherence to these rules and ask the Dean to initiate disciplinary proceedings with a student in question. The Faculty disciplinary board is guided by the Disciplinary Code for Students (available in English soon) and the proceedings may even result in an unconditional expulsion from the study programme.
